PTSA is a key acid catalyst in the production of melamine, urea‑formaldehyde and phenolic resins, polyester polyols and epoxy modifiers.
Chemical industry
Used in esterification, condensation and alkylation (e.g. alkylation of phenols or naphthalene), and in the synthesis of surfactants and specialty chemicals.
Organic synthesis
PTSA serves as a strong organic acid for ester formation, protection and deprotection reactions, polymerization reactions, and the preparation of intermediates for the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries.
Paints, varnishes and coatings
A catalyst for curing aminoplast and polyester systems, accelerating crosslinking at low temperatures, and stabilizing pH in coating formulations.
Paper industry
Impregnation of decorative papers (MF and MUF systems) and catalytic curing of resins in HPL/CPL production.
Textile industry
Dyeing processes, fiber treatment, and catalysis of polymer binders in textile finishes (alkylnaphthalenesulfonic acids are used as textile auxiliaries; PTSA is a chemically related strong sulfonic acid).
Foundry industry
A catalyst in cold‑box systems and other resin binders, accelerating the curing of molding compounds.
Furniture and woodworking industry
Paper impregnation for laminates, production of MDF/HDF and laminated boards, and catalysis of MF/MUF resins used in boards and surface finishes.
Surfactant and detergent production
Catalysis of aromatic alkylation (e.g. in the production of alkylbenzene sulfonates).

A catalyst for phenolic and novolac resins and modification of polymer system reactivity.
